Tools and Materials Needed

A number of basic tools are needed for new drywall installation. To start, have the correct number of drywall panels ready as well as a knife, hand saw, drywall screws, power drill, and tape measure. Have safety glasses and a dust mask for personal protection. Depending on the number of panels and the height at which they’ll be installed, it may be a good idea to rent a drywall lift. Other materials needed include joint tape, drywall mud, a sander, and paint and primer.

Align and Hang First Panel

Start at the ceiling and hang the first panel. Most of the time, panels are hung vertically, but they can be hung horizontally as well. The edge of the panel should be centered on a stud; if not, cut the panel to fit. Have someone hold the panel in place or use a drywall lift and screw the panel into the studs. Drywall should be screwed about every 16 inches, depending on the spacing between studs.

Add Panels, Cutting as Needed

Continue adding panels in the same manner, starting from the ceiling and going across, then down to the next level. Cut panels as needed to fit into the space, making sure the panels have no more than 1/8th inch of spacing between them.

Cut Out Holes Where Needed

Holes may need to be cut for windows, electrical outlets, or plumbing fixtures. Measure where the holes should be, then cut the panel properly before installing. Holes can be easily cut using a drywall saw. Make sure the holes are cut to the right shape and size so patching won’t be necessary.

Tape, Mud, and Sand

Once all of the panels are hung, tape all of the joints. Self-adhesive joint tape is the easiest to use and can be applied as needed across all of the joints. Overlap the joint tape on corners to ensure it is fully covered. After taping, apply three thin layers of mud, letting each layer dry before applying the next one. All layers should be feathered from the joint onto the surrounding boards to create a flat wall. Once the mud is dry, sand all of the joints to ensure they are flat.

Prime and Paint the Walls

The next step is to prime and paint the walls. Before doing this, if any texture is desired, use a spray-on texture and let dry. Then, prime the walls to ensure the paint will adhere properly. Once the primer is dried, the wall can be painted to any shade that’s desired.

Potential Problems When Installing Drywall

While hanging drywall may not be the hardest job around the house, it can be difficult to get everything right. It’s crucial to make sure panels are level and in the proper place before screwing them in. Due to the weight of drywall panels, it may be necessary to rent a lift or to have at least a couple of people helping with the job. Finally, it can be difficult to apply the joint tape and mud properly to ensure a completely flat wall.

Is an Expert a Good Idea?

Instead of trying to install the drywall on their own, many homeowners will opt to look for drywall contractors near me to get the job done. Contractors have the experience, so they can make sure the wall is perfectly flat, and they have the right tools and know-how to get the job done fast. Plus, the drywall installation cost might not be as expensive as the homeowner thought, especially once they add up the tools they need to purchase or rent before doing the installation.
If you need to install new drywall in your home, whether it’s for an addition or as part of a full renovation, it may be best to have a pro handle the job. Call us to get a quote for drywall installation or to schedule a time for us to get it done.
